How To Choose Your Favorite Scene?

A GUIDELINE TO CHOOSE THE BEST LOCATION FOR YOUR SESSION

There are many different locations in new jersey, new york, and philly to choose from for photo sessions. It’s difficult to decide what exactly you want for your photos. Sometimes my clients have no idea what they want, which is the most difficult situation for me.

There are few different ways to choose the location. I’ll go through each of the methods in the following paragraphs.

The easiest way to choose the location for your session might be looking at the photos taken by the photographer and do a session in the same location. If you like the look of certain photos, taking the photos in the same location will very likely giving you a similar result. However, the weather plays an important part as well. For me, if a client really wants a certain look of my previous work, I will make sure that I use the same equipments and take the session in the same weather even if I need to rebook the session. Most of the locations I photographed are in new jersey. If you prefer to have your session done in one of the new jersey spots, you can check my post “The Best NJ Locations for Photo Sessions”.

My favorite way to choose locations is by using color palette. Start with your favorite colors and think about what locations will have these colors.  You might end up with different locations for the same color, but there is a great chance that you will like both. For example, I personally really like the pink/blue color palette, which is the color for sea sunsets and sunrises – called blue hour before the sunrise or after the sunset. This color palette is very time and weather sensitive because you won’t get it in other hours or when it’s too cloudy, but the location of the seaside doesn’t matter too much. Any seashore will have these colors in a proper time and weather.

The above four photos are all taken during the golden hour of sunsets. All of the four are taken in different locations and have its own editing style, but the color palette is mostly yellow/gold with or without a little bit of green. If this shinning look is what you’re looking for, sunset or sunrise in a sunny day will be your first choice.

However, it doesn’t mean that one location will only give you one color palette. For example, the second photo on the left is taken on a beach during the sunset. The photos taken in the first half of the session have this golden look, and the photos taken in the second half of the session (when the sun disappeared) have the pink/blue colors.

The most common categories of locations can be: park/garden, sea/beach, and city. However, there are so many variations in each categories. For example, there are tons of different colors in the park/garden category, as shown in the four photos above. If you don’t want a specific flower in the photo, the location of the park actually does not play an important role in the result of the photos. Any professional photographer will be able to shoot good works in most parks as long as the park is not too small or too crowed.

If you prefer a specific kind of flower in your photo, I’ll suggest you to book at least three months a head of time. During the springtime, there are always flowers blooming in most of the parks I’ve been to. It’s the best if you can be a little bit flexible about what kind of flower you want to have. You can always expect beautiful flowers photos taken in the spring.
